Virginia: More and More Drugs Showing Up in the Valley

The sources for the story were two Virginia narcotics officers in the Valley. We are not mentioning their names to conceal their identities.

Washington, DC, Richmond and the Tidewater area. Police say that's where many of the dealers are coming from when they move into your neighborhood. And, they say, unless they a particular lead, it's almost impossible for them to track the dealers down.

"The chances of getting caught are not all that great, because basically you're looking for the needle in the haystack, one car load may bring in a shipment of drugs but the amount of police on 81, its not very good chance," according to one of the officers.

The perfect example of that is the drug methamphetamine. Meth is easily produced in Mexico under $500 and by the time it hits the Valley, it has a street value of more that $17,000.

The rewards are high and they're willing to take that risk to make that profit. Police say the growing Hispanic population is making it easier for many dealers to blend in and operate.

The ability to come and go and not be noticed allows them to move the drugs easily and being seasoned dealers gives then another advantage.

"When they come here, they already know police tactics and they know our surveillance," according to the Virginia officers.

Virginia police say while some drugs in the Valley come from the Valley, they believe the key in their war on drugs is stopping this movement from the outside.
