Taxi USA Offers Safe Passage for Holiday Revelers in Virginia

The holidays are a time of revelry, and for many, seasonal traditions include beer, wine, and liquor.

Coordinated by the Frederick County, Virginia Sheriff’s Office, the Safe Ride Home program aims to deter those who have been drinking from driving with free cab rides from Winchester’s Taxi USA Inc.

Taxi USA driver Troy Staley reaches back to get money from a customer following a ride last week.

“It’s a known time when you have your company parties and you have your family get-togethers,” said Virginia Sheriff’s Office Cpl. Mike Richardson. “What we try to do is deter people from getting behind the wheel of a vehicle after they’ve been drinking.”

The free cab rides are offered now through New Year’s Eve to and from destinations within Winchester and 2 miles beyond the city limits.

It is the second year Taxi USA has offered free rides during the holiday season.

“It was something that I had been wanting to do for years,” said Taxi USA owner Ron Pruitt. “It was a pretty good response last year, but I hope that as each year goes by, it gets better.”

Taxi USA also offers free cab rides within the city on election days as a good-will gesture toward the community.

For Pruitt, the fight against drunk driving is personal as well as professional.

His oldest sister, brother-in-law, and 6-week-old niece were killed by a drunk driver on Dec. 15, 1962, in Lima, Ohio. Pruitt was 10 at the time.

He said every holiday season since then has been marked by the painful memory of their deaths.

Pruitt said Christmas became especially difficult for his mother, who died a few years ago.

“I watched every holiday come around. It wasn’t so much of a holiday as it was a remembrance of her first-born daughter and her granddaughter’s death,” he said. “And that’s one of the reasons I want to be involved in this program.”

Pruitt said many people call for a taxi after an evening of drinking at area bars and restaurants, but he’d like to see more people who’ve been drinking at private parties call for a cab.

Those who need rides farther than 2 miles beyond the city limits still can receive a discounted fare to their destinations, Pruitt said. Drivers will begin charging Taxi USA’s rate of $1.80 per mile once the ride exceeds the 2-mile limit.

“A taxi fare is a heck of a lot cheaper than a DWI,” Pruitt said.

In Virginia, a conviction for drunken driving carries a minimum fine of $250 with a possible one-year driver’s license suspension, and, in severe cases, a mandatory jail term of at least five days.

Winchester defense attorney Roger Inger will pay for up to $250 of the free cab rides, a pledge Taxi USA will match.

Inger, who also helped sponsor the Safe Ride Home program last year, said he supports it because the initiative allows people to go out and have a good time without drinking and driving.
