Man gets 56 years for dragging death of trooper in Virginia

RICHMOND, Virginia - A judge imposed a 56-year prison term on a man who caused the death of state Trooper Michael T. Blanton while attempting to escape a drunken-driving stop on Interstate 64 nearly one year ago. The prosecution argued that Shawn Delano Gregory, 34, was a drug dealer trying to protect his stash of drugs and cash when he jumped back into his BMW to flee.

Blanton, 29, tried to stop Gregory and grab the ignition key. But he found himself barely holding on at the open driver's door as the BMW quickly accelerated up an exit ramp. A trial witness said Gregory had told him the trooper was trying to snatch the ignition key.

Blanton was still with the car some seconds later when the BMW left the pavement at nearly 70 mph and rolled three times, according to testimony. Virginia police found his body underneath the car, which came to rest upright on its wheels near the upper end of the long exit ramp on Jan. 29, 2003.

In addition to the 40 years for Blanton's death, Henrico County Judge George Tidey imposed sentences of 16 years, one to be served consecutively, for cocaine and heroin charges and 10 years suspended for a marijuana charge.
